คำและสำนวนในภาษาอังกฤษที่เกี่ยวชื่อสีมีเยอะแยะมาก แต่วันนี้แอดจะพาทุกคนไปรู้จักกับคำและสำนวนที่มีคำว่า “Black” มาให้อ่านกันค่ะ ไหนลองมาดูกันสิว่าจะเดาถูกมั้ยว่าแปลว่าอะไรบ้าง
1. Black and white
คิดหรือตัดสินบางสิ่งให้ดูเหมือนว่ามันง่ายมาก ราวกับว่าทุกอย่างมีแค่ 2 แบบคือดีกับชั่วเท่านั้น เรียกว่า มองขาด
– My talent is I can see through everything in black and white.
2. Black and blue
แผลบาดเจ็บฟกช้ำ
– His face is really black and blue. I can’t imagine how he hurts.
3. Black out
หน้ามืด เป็นลม
– Alex just blacked out after he’d heard the truth.
4. Black sheep
แตกต่างไม่เข้าพวก แกะดำ
– My oldest brother was the black sheep in our family. He dropped out of school at fifteen.
5. Black eye
ฟกช้ำที่ตา
– After he came home, I could see the black eye on him and I’d know what he did.
6. Black as a skillet
สกปรกมากๆ จนเป็นสีดำ
– My son’s hands always appear as black as a skillet when I allow him to play in the backyard.
7. Black market
พื้นที่ที่ถูกทำการค้าขายของผิดกฎหมาย
– Most people have heard about the black market where illegal stuff was sold or bought.
8. Blackball someone
ออกเสียงเพื่อคัดค้าน/ต่อต้าน/ปฏิเสธ ใครบ้างคนที่จะมาเป็นสมาชิกในหน่วยงาน, บริษัทหรือตำแหน่งใดๆ
– The Big group has been blackballed from another group, so they couldn’t work with no one anymore.
9. Blacklist someone
บันทึกรายชื่อผู้ที่ไม่สามารถกระทำการใดๆได้อีก เนื่องจากเคยกระทำผิดกฎมาก่อน
– I was in a lot of debt a while ago, and was unable to pay it all back, so I’ve been blacklisted. I’m not allowed to get a mortgage in my own name.
10. Blackmail someone
บังคับ ข่มขู่เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งความลับ หรือเพื่อทำให้กลัว
– Kristen has been blackmailed by her ex because he wanted a lot of money from her. She’s never known how bad he is, until now.
11. In someone’s black books
เสียความเคารพ ความน่าเชื่อถือ
– My manager is in the company’s black books. She stole my own idea to be hers and got a chance to be promoted last year. So, she was considered to get fired.
12. Black tie event/affair
เป็นงานทางการที่ผู้ชายจะใส่หูกระต่ายสีดำกับสูททักซิโด้
– This evening event is quite formal or we can call it a black tie event.
13. In the black
ประสบความสำเร็จ
– When the company changed its CEO, it became in the black immediately.
14. Pitch black
พื้นที่ที่มืดมาก จนมองไม่เห็นอะไรเลย
– I was afraid to go downstairs, the whole house was pitch black, and very quiet.
