Conjunctive Adverbs คือ คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ที่ใช้ในการเชื่อมข้อความ โดยมีจุดประสงค์ที่ใช้แตกต่างกันออกไป การใช้ Conjunctive Adverbs สามารถเขียนเป็นประโยคได้ 3 ลักษณะ โดยต้องใช้เครื่องหมายวรรคตอนให้ถูกต้อง
ตัวอย่าง
Ken got up late. Therefore, he missed the bus.
Ken got up late. He, therefore, missed the bus.
Ken got up late; therefore, he missed the bus.
การเขียนประโยคโดยใช้ Conjunctive Adverbs สามารถเขียนได้ทั้ง 3 รูปแบบ โดยที่ความหมายของประโยคไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง
Conjunctive Adverbs
1. เชื่อมข้อความที่ขัดแย้งกัน (showing contrast or opposition) เช่น still, yet, however, nevertheless, nonetheless, conversely, in contrast, on the contrary, on the other hand เป็นต้น
I studied hard. still, I didn’t pass the exam. ฉันตั้งใจเรียนหนังสือ แต่ฉันก็ยังคงสอบไม่ผ่าน
This hotel is luxurious; however, the service is not impressive. นี่เป็นโรงแรมหรู อย่างไรก็ตามการบริการไม่น่าประทับใจ
You’ll have to get up now, otherwise you’ll miss your bus. คุณต้องตื่นแล้ว ไม่อย่างนั้นคุณจะตกรถ
2. เชื่อมข้อความที่สอดคล้องกันหรือเสริมกัน ( showing addition) เช่น in addition, besides, moreover, furthermore, also, on top of that, above all เป็นต้น

3. เชื่อมข้อความบอกสาเหตุและผลลัพธ์ (showing cause-result) เช่น therefore, thus, accordingly, consequently, as a result, for this reason, then, hence เป็นต้น
Her house was bigger and therefore more expensive. บ้านของหล่อนใหญ่ เพราะฉะนั้นราคาจึงแพงกว่า
The weather was good. Therefore , we went to a picnic. อากาศดี ดังนั้นพวกเราจึงไปปิคนิก
Productivity has fallen. Accordingly, workers’ bonuses will be reduced. ยอดการผลิตลดลง ดังนั้น โบนัสของพนักงานจึงถูกลดลง
4. แสดงการยกตัวอย่างหรือแสดงลำดับเวลา (Time) เช่น first, next, lastly, finally, then, meanwhile (ในเวลาเดียวกัน), afterward, subsequently, then, later, ago, before, beforehand, previously เป็นต้น
Meanwhile, I sold my shop and started a new business. ในขณะเดียวกันฉันก็ขายร้านของฉันและเริ่มธุรกิจใหม่

7. ข้อความที่แสดงการเน้น (showing emphasis) เช่น actually, in fact, indeed, as a matter of fact เป็นต้น
