Sequence of tenses คือ การใช้ Tense ของกริยาในประโยคตาม (Subordinate Clause) ให้สอดคล้องกันกับ Tense ของกริยาในประโยคหลัก (Main Clause) การจะรู้ว่าประโยคไหนเป็นประโยคตามนั้นให้ดูได้ที่คำเชื่อม (Conjunctive) เพราะประโยคตามจะอยู่หลังคำเชื่อมเสมอ และการใช้กริยาของประโยคตามให้สอดคล้องกับกริยาในประโยคหลักนั้นมีกฎเกณฑ์ดังต่อไปนี้
- เมื่อ ประโยค Main clause เป็น Present หรือ Future tense ประโยค Subordinate Clause จะเป็น tense อะไรก็ได้แล้วแต่ความหมายที่ต้องการหรือเหมาะสม

2. หาก Main clause เป็น Past tense ประโยค Subordinate clause ต้องเป็น Past หรือ Future in the Past ตามด้วย

ข้อยกเว้น
2.1 หาก Main Clause จะเป็น Past Tense แต่ถ้าประโยค Subordinate Clause ที่เป็นข้อเท็จจริง หรือมีข้อความบ่งถึงกิริยาอาการที่เกิดขึ้นอยู่เป็นประจำ หรือเป็นปกตินิสัยในปัจจุบัน ก็ให้ใช้ Present Tense ได้ เช่น

2.2 หาก Main Clause จะเป็น Past Tense แต่ถ้าประโยค Subordinate Clause เป็น Adjective clause จะสามารถใช้ tense อะไรก็ได้ ขึ้นกับความหมายหรือใจความที่้หมาะสม

2.3 หาก Main Clause จะเป็น Past Tense แต่ถ้า Subordinate clause เป็น adverb clause (Comparison-comparative degree) จะสามารถใช้ tense อะไรก็ได้ ขึ้นกับความหมายหรือใจความที่หมาะสม
I loved you more than he loves you.
He liked you better than he likes me.
