Phrasal verbs หรือ กริยาวลีกลุ่มคำที่ประกอบด้วยคำกริยาตามด้วย adverb, preposition หรือทั้งสองคำ ที่เมื่อนำมารวมกันแล้วได้เป็นคำกริยาที่มีความหมายไม่เหมือนเดิม เช่น
give = ให้
up = ขึ้น
give up แปลว่า เลิก, หยุด
come = มา
across = ข้าม
come across = พบโดยบังเอิญ
see = มอง
off = ออกจาก
see off = ไปส่ง (เช่น ที่สนามบิน)
Phrasal verbs แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ
- Separable verbs คือ กริยาวลีที่สามารถแยก verb และ preposition ได้ซึ่งมักเป็นกริยาวลีที่ต้องการกรรม เช่น

ตัวอย่าง
Jane was giving leaflets out to everyone in front of the school.
หรือเขียนว่า Jane was giving out leaflets to everyone in front of the school.
เจนแจกใบปลิวให้ทุกคนที่หน้าโรงเรียน
Turn on the TV / Turn the TV on เปิดโทรทัศน์
Turn off the TV / Turn the TV off ปิดโทรทัศน์
Could you turn on the light?/Could you turn the light on? คุณช่วยเปิดไฟได้ไหม
Could you turn off the light?/Could you turn the light off? คุณช่วยปิดไฟได้ไหม
ในกรณีที่กรรมเป็นคำสรรพนามจะต้องวางไว้หน้าคำบุพบทเสมอ เช่น
You can try it on. จะเขียนว่า You can try on it. ไม่ได้
Please turn it off จะเขียนว่า Please turn off it ไม่ได้
2. Inseparable Verbs คือ กริยาวลีที่ถ้ามีกรรมมารับจะไม่สามารถแยก verb กับ preposition จากกันได้ โดยกรรมจะวางไว้หลังกริยาวลีเสมอ เช่น

ตัวอย่าง
I always run into my teacher at the mall. ฉันบังเอิญเจออาจารย์ของฉันที่ห้างสรรพสินค้าบ่อย ๆ
We get on the bus here. พวกเราขึ้นรถบัสที่นี่
Inseparable Verbs บางตัวก็ไม่ต้องมีกรรม เช่น

ตัวอย่าง

ในบางครั้งกริยาวลีอาจจะเป็นแบบ three-word verb คือมีการใช้คำบุพบทมากกว่า 1 ตัว เช่น
