some กับ any เป็นคำนำหน้าคำนามที่ใช้บอกปริมาณ แปลว่า “บ้าง หรือ จำนวนหนึ่ง” ทั้งสองคำนี้สามารถนำหน้าคำนามนับไม่ได้ และคำนามนับได้พหูพจน์ได้ เช่น
some milk any coffee
some tourists any students
เราจะใช้ some ในประโยคบอกเล่า เช่น
- We have some milk in the fridge.
- There are some books on the shelf.
some สามารถใช้ในกรณีที่เป็นประโยคคำถามได้ แต่จะเป็นประโยคคำถามที่ผู้ถามมั่นใจอยู่แล้วว่าเขาจะตอบ yes เช่น
- Would you like some coffee?
- Have you lost something?
- Could I have some water, please?

สำหรับ any เราใช้ ในประโยคคำถามและประโยคปฏิเสธทั่วๆไป เช่น
ประโยคปฏิเสธ
- I don’t have any money left.
- There aren’t any birds in the tree.
** ประโยคปฏิเสธในที่นี้รวมไปถึงประโยคบอกเล่าที่มีคำที่มีความหมายในเชิงปฏิเสธ ถึงแม้ว่าจะไม่มีคำว่า not อยู่ในประโยคก็ตาม เช่น
- I hardly ask for any help.
- We can’t live without any water.
ประโยคคำถาม
- Do you have any pens?
- Have you found anything important?
- Is there any coffee in the cup?
นอกจากนี้เรายังใช้ any ในกรณีที่เป็นเรื่องที่ไม่เจาะจง เช่น
- Which dress would you like to wear to the party? คุณอยากใส่ชุดไหนไปงานปาร์ตี้
- Any dress. ชุดไหนก็ได้
เรายังใช้ any กับประโยค If-clause ได้อีกด้วย เช่น
- If anyone wants to answer the question, please raise your hand.
- If anything goes wrong, I’ll cancel the project.
