Adverb clause คือ ประโยค Subordinate clause ที่มีประธานและส่วนขยายเป็นของตัวเองและทำหน้าที่เหมือน adverb คือทำหน้าที่ขยายคำกริยา (verb) ขยายคำคุณศัพท์ (adjective) และขยายคำกริยาวิเศษณ์ (adverb) adverb clause แต่ละประเภทมีคำนำหน้าแตกต่างกันไป ดังนี้
1. Adverb Clause of Time คือ clause ที่ขยายกริยา หรือ adjective และ adverb ในประโยคหลักเพื่อบอกว่า การกระทำนั้นเกิดขึ้นเมื่อใด โดย Adverb Clause of Time จะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้าประโยคเพื่อเชื่อมประโยคเข้ากับ main clause
- when = เมื่อ
- whenever = ทุกครั้งที่
- while = ในขณะที่
- after = หลังจาก
- before = ก่อนที่
- untill/till = จนกระทั่ง
- since = ตั้งแต่
- as = เมื่อ, ในขณะที่
- as soon as = ในทันทีที่
- once = ทันทีที่
You should say goodbye to your brother before you leave for Europe. คุณควรจะบอกลาน้องชายของคุณก่อยที่คุณจะไปยุโรป
He has lived here since he was born. เขาอาศัยที่นี่ตั้งแต่เขาเกิด
I will come and see you as soon as I have finish my work. ผมจะมาพบกับคุณทันที่งานของผมเสร็จ
Don’t talk while i’m reading. อย่าพูดตอนที่ฉันกำลังอานหนังสือ
2. Adverb Clause of Place คือ clause ที่ขยายกริยา หรือ adjective และ adverb ในประโยคหลักเพื่อบอกว่า การกระทำนั้นเกิดขึ้นที่ใด โดย Adverb Clause of Place จะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้า โดย adverb clause of place ไม่ใช้วางไว้หน้า main clause
- where = ในที่ๆ
- wherever = ทุกๆที่
You may go wherever you like. คุณสามารถไปที่ไหนก็ได้ที่คุณชอบ
Where there is a will, there is a way. ที่ไหนมีความมุ่งมั่นที่นั่นยอมมีทางออก
3. Adverb Clause of Manner คือ clause ที่ขยายกริยา หรือ adjective และ adverb ในประโยคหลักเพื่อบอกว่า การกระทำนั้นเกิดขึ้นในลักษณะอย่างไร ท่าทางอย่างไร โดย Adverb Clause of Manner จะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้า โดย adverb clause of manner ไม่ใช้วางไว้หน้า main clause
- as = อย่างที่, เช่นเดียวกับที่
- as though = ราวกับว่า
- as if = ราวกับว่า
It looks as though it might rain. ดูราวกับว่าฝนจะตก
He works as a machine does. เขาทำงานอย่างกับเครื่องจักร
4. Adverb Clause of Purpose คือ clause ที่ขยายกริยา หรือ adjective และ adverb ในประโยคหลักเพื่อบอกว่า วัตถุประสงค์ โดย Adverb Clause of Purpose จะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้าประโยคเพื่อเชื่อมประโยคเข้ากับ main clause
- so that = เพื่อว่า
- in order that = เพื่อว่า
- in the hope that = เพื่อว่า
I study hard so that I may pass my final exam. ฉันเรียนอย่างหนักเพื่อที่จะสอบปลายภาคให้ผ่าน
The police went there in order that they could get some clues for the murder case. ตำรวจมาที่นี่เพื่อที่จะสามารถเก็บหลักฐานคดีฆาตรกรรมได้
ใน adverb clause of purpose จะมี modal verb อยู่เสมอ ต้องระวังเรื่อง tense นั่นคือ ถ้าใน main clause of purpose เป็น present tense ใน adverb clause of purpose จะต้องใช้ modal ที่เป็นไปในทิศทางเดียวกัน คือ will, can แต่ถ้า main clause เป็น past tense ใน adverb clause of purpose จะต้องใช้ modal “would, could”
