5. Adverb Clause of Reason/Cause คือ คือ clause ที่ขยายกริยา เพื่อบอกเหตุผลที่ทำสิ่งนั้นๆลงไป โดย Adverb Clause of Reason/Cause โดยจะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้า
- that = เพราะว่า
- because = เพราะว่า
- as = เนื่องจาก
- since = เนื่องจาก
- now that = เพราะว่า
- inasmuch as = โดยเหตุที่
Now that the civil war has ended, peace came back to the country. เพราะว่าสงครามจบลงแล้ว ความสงบสุขจึงคืนสู่บ้านเมือง
Since the weather is bad today, we will reschedule the trip. เนื่องจากอากาศไม่ดี เราจะเปลี่ยนทริป
adverb clause of reason/cause ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย now that ปกติจะวางไว้หน้า main clause
6. Adverb Clause of Result คือ clause ที่ใช้แสดงผลหรือบอกผลของการกระทำ โดยจะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้า
- so that = ดังนั้น
- so…that = จนกระทั่ง
- such…that = จนกระทั่ง
I am so thirsty that I could drink a cup of water. ฉันหิวน้ำมาก ดังนั้น ฉันขอดื่มน้ำซักแก้ว
It was so hot that we couldn’t play. อากาศร้อนมากจนเราไม่สามารถเล่นได้
The elevator was so crowded that I have to take the stairs. เนื่องจากลิฟท์เต็ม ฉันจึงต้องขึ้นบันไดแทน
7. Adverb Clause of Condition คือ clause ที่แสดงเงื่อนไขหรือเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นการสมมติของกริยาในประโยคหลัก เป็น clause ที่ใช้บ่อยมาก โดยจะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้า
- as long as = ตราบเท่าที่
- if = ถ้า
- unless = ถ้า…ไม่
- on condition (that) = ถ้า
- whether = ไม่ว่า
- provided (that), providing (that) = ถ้า, ตราบเท่าที่
If you ask me, I would tell you the truth. ถ้าคุณถามฉัน ฉันจะบอกความจริง
I think you should resign unless you are happy with what you do. ฉันคิดว่าคุณควรลาออกจากตำแหน่ง ถ้าคุณไม่มีความสุขกับสิ่งที่ทำ
The workers would go on strike unless the wage rates were raised. พนักงานจะออกมาประท้วง ถ้าค่าแรงคงไม่ขึ้น
unless มีความหมายว่า if …not คือ ถ้าไม่… หรือ ยกเว้นเสียแต่ว่า…
8. Adverb Clause of Concession/Contrast คือ clause ที่แสดงความหมายตรงข้ามกันกับประโยคหลัก โดยจะมี subordinate conjunctions ดังต่อไปนี้นำหน้า
- though = แม้ว่า
- although = ถึงแม้ว่า
- even though = ถึงแม้ว่า
- even if = ถึงแม้ว่า
Though he is poor, he is honest. ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะยากจน แต่เขาก็ซื่อสัตย์
Although he studied so hard, he failed the exam. ถึงแม้ว่าเขาจะตั้งใจเรียน แต่เขาก็สอบตกอยู่ดี
9. Adverb Clause of Comparison แบ่งออกเป็น 2 แบบ ดังนี้
9.1 Adverb Clause of Comparison of degree ใช้
- as…as = เท่ากันกับ
- so…as = เท่ากันกับ
- than = กว่า
9.2 Adverb Clause of Comparison of manner ใช้ as
Her younger sister is as beautiful as she is. น้องสาวของหล่อนสวยพอๆกับหล่อน
Max has done as many presentations as I have. แมกซ์นำเสนอข้อมูลเท่ากับที่ฉันทำ
He is older than he looks. เขาดูแก่กว่าหน้าตาของเขา
