คงมีหลายๆ คนที่ยังไม่รู้ว่า เราควรจะใช้ Either…or และ Neither…nor เมื่อไหร่? เดี๋ยวมาทำความเข้าใจกันเลยค่ะ
เราใช้ either.. or เพื่อพูดเกี่ยวกับทางเลือกที่มี และ neither…nor เพื่อการแสดงออกที่บอกว่าเราไม่มีทางเลือก
Either/ or = Choice between two (provides a choice between two possibilities)
คือ ทางเลือกระหว่างสองอัน (ให้ตัวเลือกสองทางที่พอเป็นไปได้ ไม่อันใดก็อันหนึ่ง)
ตัวอย่างเช่น
Either my mom or dad will attend. (My mom or my dad will attend)
= ไม่คุณแม่ก็คุณพ่อของฉันจะมาเข้าร่วมงาน
Either you or John has to finish the report before 5 pm.
= ไม่คุณก็จอห์นต้องทำรีพอร์ทให้เสร็จก่อนห้าโมงเย็น
You can choose either the red shirt or the blue shirt.
= คุณสามารถเลือกไม่เสื้อเชิ้ตสีแดงก็เสื้อเชิ้ตสีฟ้า
Neither/nor = None of the choices (not this one and not the other)
คือ ไม่มีทางเลือก (ไม่ใช่ทางเลือกนี้และทางอื่นๆก็ไม่ใช่ ไม่ใช่ทั้งสองอัน)
I drink neither coffee nor tea. (I don’t drink coffee and tea)
= ฉันไม่ดื่มทั้งกาแฟและก็ชาNeither
Neither John nor Fred likes doing the dishes. (John and Fred don’t like doing the dishes)
= ทั้ง John และ Fred ไม่ชอบล้างจาน
I want neither the red shirt nor the blue shirt. (I don’t want the red shirt and the blue shirt)
= ฉันไม่ต้องการทั้งเสื้อเชิ้ตสีแดงและสีฟ้า
NOTE:
NEITHER สามารถออกเสียงเป็น นีเดอร์ (อเมริกัน) หรือ ไนเดอร์ (อังกฤษ) ก็ได้
EITHER สามารถออกเสียงเป็น อีเดอร์ (อเมริกัน) หรือ ไอเดอร์ (อังกฤษ) ก็ได้
